Black Mountains Smokery Celebrates 21 Years
It seems like yesterday when Jonathan, driving home in a February blizzard, slid our newly branded, very second hand van into a stile on his way home. Meanwhile our kiln had got stuck on repeat due to a power cut, and we arrived back at work (on foot!) the next morning to find to a whole batch of very burnt smoked duck, which was to become our staple supper of “Stock Control Pie” for the next few weeks! And that was our first week of trading in February 1996.
However, our luck improved and sales have grown year on year apart from 2008 (start of financial crisis) and 2011 (snow bound deliveries). Our new shop, office and dispatch room, developed in 2015, have provided us with much improved space and logistics to further grow the business.
Our 20th year brought us new packaging which we are delighted with; focusing on our wonderful surroundings in the beautiful Black Mountains. I think we nearly sent our designers mad with the constant emphasis on sandstone versus granite and the fact that the mountains are anything but black! They are, in fact, “The Purple Headed Mountains,” in the well-loved hymn, “All things bright & beautiful.”
