Adventure Awaits in the Brecon Beacons
Adventure Awaits in the Brecon Beacons
Nestled in the heart of Wales, the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog) is a landscape made for adventure – from towering peaks to cascading waterfalls and peaceful forest trails, the region has long been a magnet for walkers, nature lovers and anyone seeking a fresh breath of mountain air. Here are just a few of the reasons we love living here, with so much to see and do!
Chasing Waterfalls
One of the region’s biggest draws is its collection of dramatic waterfall walks, each offering something unique. Among the most famous routes is the Four Waterfalls Walk near Ystradfellte, which takes in a series of powerful falls set deep within woodland valleys. Paths wind through mossy gorges and over ancient stone bridges, creating an atmosphere that feels almost enchanted. In autumn the colours are breathtaking, while in summer the shaded paths offer cool relief.
Another highlight is Henrhyd Falls, the tallest waterfall in South Wales, with its curtain of water plunging into a rocky amphitheatre, it is as impressive in full flow after heavy rain as it is peaceful on a bright summer afternoon. Film fans also love visiting the cave behind the falls, famously featured as the entrance to the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises.

Woodland Wanders
One of the most enchanting woodland wanders in the Brecon Beacons is Taf Fechan Forest, a peaceful stretch of ancient trees and riverside paths that feels a world away from the busy towns nearby. The forest weaves along the Taf Fechan River, creating a natural corridor of moss covered boulders, gentle cascades and towering conifers. It is a wonderful place for an unhurried stroll, with routes that suit both casual walkers and those wanting to extend their adventure deeper into the hills above.
Coed Cefn offers a different yet equally rewarding woodland experience. This beautiful hilltop woodland sits just outside our home village of Crickhowell and is known for its ancient beech trees, winding trails and views over the Usk Valley. The circular walk here is gentle but incredibly satisfying, climbing gradually to reveal glimpses of Sugar Loaf and the surrounding countryside between the branches. Coed Cefn is a designated nature reserve, so expect a rich habitat full of birdsong and seasonal wildflowers. It is the perfect place to wander slowly, take in the changing colours of the canopy and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that makes woodland walks in the Brecon Beacons so special.
Conquer the Mountains
For many visitors, no trip to the Brecon Beacons is complete without climbing one of its iconic peaks. The range offers mountains that suit all levels, from gentle slopes to challenging ridge walks.
The most famous of all is Pen y Fan, the highest summit in South Wales, and on a clear day the views stretch across the sprawling landscape, from rolling farmland to dramatic open moorland. Nearby peaks such as Corn Du and Cribyn create an impressive horseshoe that feels wild and remote despite its popularity.

Being based in Crickhowell we love Sugar Loaf Mountain near here, which is one of the most rewarding experiences in the Brecon Beacons, offering a perfect blend of accessible paths and breathtaking scenery. The ascent is steady rather than steep, making it suitable for most walkers, and the route winds through open fields, heather covered slopes and patches of woodland before emerging onto the broad summit ridge. From the top, you are treated to panoramic views across the Usk Valley, the Black Mountains and even towards the distant peaks of Mid Wales on a clear day.
A Taste of the Region
Adventure in the Brecon Beacons works up an appetite, and this is where Black Mountains Smokery comes in. After a day of exploring waterfalls, forests or mountain paths, returning to a delicious spread of locally smoked salmon, chicken or cheeses is the perfect way to unwind. We love receiving visitors to our smokery shop in Crickhowell, however we also offer a wide range of hampers and individual products for delivery nationwide.
