A Foodies’s Day Out in the Brecon Beacons (with a Smoky Twist)

If you love great food, fresh air and discovering hidden gems, there’s nowhere quite like the Brecon Beacons. Nestled amongst rolling green hills, market towns and ancient woodlands, this corner of Wales has quietley become a haven for food lovers – and we’re proud to call it home.
Here’s our idea of the perfect foodie day out, blending local flavour, gentle adventure and a stop at Black Mountains Smokery.
Morning: A Walk to Wake the Appetite
Start your day in the charming town of Crickhowell – in 2025, it was listed amongst The Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live in Wales, praised for its independent shops and community spirit. Wander across the 18th-century bridge, explore the independent shops, and maybe pick up a coffee and pastry from a local bakery to kick-start your day.
Then, lace up your walking boots and head up Table Mountain. The steady climb rewards you with sweeping views over the Usk Valley and the Black Mountains beyond.
Lunchtime: Discover the Taste of Tradition
After your walk, why not stop by our smokery shop, just outside Crickhowell?
We’ve been traditionally smoking multi-award winning salmon, fish, duck, chicken and cheese here for years, using local oak chips for a distinctive, mellow flavour.
Our shop is stocked with our full range of smoked delicacies, along with Welsh cheeses, chutneys and other carefully chosen local produce – perfect for putting together your own picnic, planning a special supper, or picking up a foodie gift.
While we don’t currently have tastings planned until December, we’re always happy to chat about what makes our products special and help you choose something you’ll love.
Afternoon: Picnic with a view
With your smokery finds in hand, head to Llangorse Lake – the largest natural lake in South Wales. Find a quiet spot to picnic and take in the views of the water, the surrounding hills, and the occasional sailing boat drifting by.
Pair our smoked salmon or duck with crusty local bread, fresh leaves, and a drizzle of beetroot & thyme dressing or raspberry and wholegrain mustard – simple but unforgettable.
Evening: Bring the Brecon Beacons Home
Before heading home (or back to your cottage or campsite), why not treat yourself or someone special to a Welsh Hamper from our shop? They’re perfect for birthdays, thank-you gifts, or simply for keeping the holiday flavour alive a little longer. And if you discover a new favourite but can’t carry it all, don’t worry, you can always order for delivery in mainland UK.
Why We Love it Here
The Brecon Beacons isn’t just about stunning scenery – its about slow days, fresh local produce, and that warm, Welsh welcome that makes you want to come back again and again.
