Gavin Patterson is a Zimbabwean-born winemaker who made a name for himself in South Africa, creating beautiful terracotta amphora-aged wines.

"The very nature of these amphora allows for an unaffected connection to the outside world and the ebb and flow of the environment that surrounds which as a winemaker I find intriguing and exciting to work with to make wines of purity, focus and longevity." Gavin Patterson

Now based in the UK (conveniently just down the road from the Smokery) he's creating British wine; Teku Teku is Stonebird wine's first UK venture.  It is a 2020 vintage mix of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown in Kent and aged in amphorae in Monmouthshire, with minimal intervention. The Stonebird motto "Wines of the earth, made in earth".

The wine has a playful peach colour, and also has peach on the nose with orange zest and elderflower. Flavours of blood orange, rhubarb, and an exciting zingy acidity are balanced with a distinct chalky element from the amphorae. Lovely and long.

Serve well chilled, in good company. The wine opens up beautifully in the glass.
